Oakland Charters are Oaklanders. Our founders and board consist of Oaklanders who’ve served as teachers, school leaders, advocates, board members, funders, parents, and others – a strong Oakland community who believe public education can be innovative, always improving, and achieve ever greater results in terms of equity and quality. We believe the exact management and governance structure of a school is less important than the outcomes – equity, quality, and true community accountability. We know that a healthy charter sector supports and adopts policies that increase equity in our schools, ensuring that we are serving demographics that are reflective of our communities.
Oakland is home to 42 charter public schools. The vast majority of our school organizations were founded right here in Oakland. Oakland charter schools enroll approximately thirty percent of all students that attend a public school in the city. Some are in OUSD facilities. Some are authorized by the County, some by OUSD. All are focused on being contributing members of the Oakland public education community.
Oakland charter public schools are thriving members of the Oakland public education system, recognized for their long history and bright future of contributions to educating Oakland children with equity, quality, innovation, transparency, and accountability.
We support the continual improvement of Oakland charter public schools through school leader and board trainings; governance support; board member recruitment, placement, and development; communications and advocacy; and sector-wide collaboration with OUSD and other public and non-profit organizations that form the Oakland public education ecosystem.
